Joann Cheong asked:

Cholesterol and heart disease has long been the favorite subjects of most medical studies. Almost a hundred of researches and studies have been conducted just to find out the real link between cholesterol and heart disease. It’s nice to know that most of these studies have succeeded in finding the connection between these two interesting concepts.

So what do the studies have found out about cholesterol and heart disease?

The link between the two is explained on the notion that high level of cholesterol in the body may lead to heart disease. The question is how high exactly must the cholesterol be in the body to lead to heart disease? Well, this is what many studies have found out:

Cholesterol is highly needed in the body for the organs to function properly. It is a fat-like substance that serves a number of useful functions. For instance, the liver needs it for its proper functioning. It also helps to maintain the cellular structures on the body and cholesterol is highly capable of transmitting the nerve impulses. However, it is important to note that all of these mentioned useful functions can only be performed with an exact level. If the amount of fat exceeds from what the body needs to function properly, the tendency is certain complications like heart disease may occur.

Note that the fat substances travel around your body in tiny clumps of fat and protein known medically as lipoproteins. There are two kinds of this though: the HDL or good cholesterol, and the LDL or bad cholesterol. The LDL is the one that carries cholesterol where it is needed, and the HDL is the one that carries leftover cholesterol back to the liver. Now, the connection between the two occurs when a high level of cholesterol is carried around your system. Heart disease will occur once the LDL cholesterol exceeds on its normal amount. It will travel through the arteries and since the LDL is high, it tends to build up in the coronary arteries forming hard lumps known as plaques. The plaque is actually what makes the arteries rigid and narrower. If this happens, the flow of the blood and oxygen to the heart will be altered. Chest pain can be felt, and if the arteries are completely blocked, heart attack develops.

For such reasons, people who are afraid to develop risks of heart disease are advised to lower their cholesterol level. According to certain studies that address the link between cholesterol and heart disease, the best way to reduce cholesterol and prevent heart disease is to adopt a healthy diet. Note that the link between the two is made possible with poor diet. So it is then wise to eat a healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight. Just eat foods that are good to the heart, such as vegetables, legumes, and certain types of fish, low fat dairy milk, and a lot more. Also, stop smoking as it will only contribute to unhealthy high cholesterol values. Finally, do some healthy exercise to allow your heart to pump more blood with less effort. That way you can break the link between cholesterol and heart disease.

Cooper asked:

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in England and Wales.

In coronary heart disease (CHD) arteries that provide the heart with oxygen become narrowed. This can place increased demands on the heart. Consequences of this can include angina and heart attack.

As with many diseases people can have unavoidable genetic dispositions to heart disease. However, there are a number of key lifestyle changes that can be employed to drastically reduce the risk of CHD. This includes the reduction of alcohol consumption, stopping smoking and adopting a healthy diet. But a key area for reducing the risk of CHD is exercise.

Doing just 30 minutes of regular moderate intensity exercise can half your chances of getting CHD. It is important to consult your Doctor before undertaking a new exercise regime.

You could start simply by taking the dog for regular or longer walks, getting off the bus a few stops early on the way to work or parking further away from the office. As you increase your exercise levels you could consider taking up running or purchasing a bike. Or investigate active hobbies such as sailing or tennis. It is important to ease yourself into a new exercise regime. This is not just for health reasons but also so that you can maintain interest. In order to stay motivated, set achievable goals and work towards them. Longer term goals could be to run a local fun run or even a marathon. This would not only help your own health but you could raise money for a charity perhaps even a heart disease charity and help those less fortunate and those who did not follow the advice that you have taken.

As well as reducing the risk of heart disease, exercise can help lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and improve general well being.

Chris Marshall asked:

Scientists have identified a genetic flaw which increases the risk of heart disease and heart attacks. Researchers from the US and Canada found that that up to one in four white people carries the section of DNA which increases the risk of heart disease by around 40%. Whilst in Iceland researchers found the same genetic variant was linked to a fifth of heart attacks.

Both teams of researchers scanned the genomes of patients who had coronary heart disease or who had suffered a heart attack to see if there were any differences between them and healthy people. The US/Canadian scientists found a section of DNA, called an allele, n a specific chromosome which was associated with heart disease. They studied 23,000 people and found that those with one copy of this allele had a moderately increased risk of heart disease, whilst those with two copies, which accounts for about 20-25 % of white people, have a 30 to 40% higher risk of heart disease than individuals who carry no copies.

Professor Ruth McPherson, of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, who worked on the study, said: “The effect is less than that of smoking or having a high cholesterol level. Nonetheless, screening healthy people for this genetic marker could provide information on future risk of heart disease and help identify those individuals who would benefit most from early applications of strategies to reduce heart disease risk.”

The US/Canadian researchers now plan to check if the findings also apply to people from black and Asian ethnic minorities too.

Meanwhile in Iceland, the study of 17,000 people looked at the same strand of DNA. They also found that more than 20% of people had two copies of the faulty allele which led to a 60% increased risk of heart attack, compared with those who with no copies. Dr Kari Stefansson, who led the research for the Decode genetics company, said if those at risk of heart attacks were identified, then they could be given medications such as statins, or cardiac procedures - as well as healthy living advice - to reduce their risk.

Despite the research by both sets of scientists it still remains unclear why this particular area of the genome is linked to heart disease, although researchers believe it may be associated with hardening and narrowing of the arteries.

Professor Peter Weissberg, medical director of the British Heart Foundation, said: “Trying to find genes that put some families at an increased risk of heart attacks is like trying to find a collection of needles scattered amongst a field full of hay-stacks. The significance of these two studies is that two independent research teams have homed in on the same hay-stack. This makes it very likely that they are close to identifying a needle - an important gene in that region. This will take a lot more research and - once found - the gene will be only one of several that are important. This research represents an important step along a very long journey, but a step in the right direction.”

I am currently writing a fiction and decided i need an actual medical explanation for the story. But i can’t seem to find the information with classified causes and risks. Can you help me? It will be so much helping if you can give me some links to the information sources. What kind of heart disease could possibly infected a young woman at the age of 20 with no significant health record and family with the history of heart disease or heart problem? Thank you.

Susan Dean asked:

Symptoms of heart disease often go undetected because we as a society in general will tend to put up with what we may call heart burn or dizziness or swallen legs and much more without thinking it necessary to go to the doctor. We think these symptoms are nothing and will just go away. And of course they often do go away for a while but then they return. I know from experience with two brothers that they put up with this type of thing for years and years without seeking help until one of them ended up having a major heart attack.

When he was checked out properly at the hospital he was told that he had already had minor attacks but didn’t know it! This also was the case with another brother. So to all you macho men in particular that think nothing will happen to me – get checked out if you have been experiencing any of these symptoms of heart disease. One of my brothers continued ignoring these symptoms and sadly he died of a massive heart attack. This was so unnecessary.

I know many of you may feel that they are just bothering the doctor with minor ailments but really these could be the start to something fatal. It is always better to be cautious than to be ignorant. Even though very healthy active people can have a heart attack it is still more likely to occur in people who are over weight, smoke, are unfit, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and are stressed. This coupled with signs such as chest tightening, dizziness, swollen legs, palpitations, shortening of breath are a major sign of heart problems that definitely should not be ignored. If you are someone like this then you should be taking on some preventative measures before it is too late.

Some of these measures are firstly seeing to your doctor to have some tests done. Seriously consider losing weight by eating healthy at the same time as starting a gentle exercise program that has been approved by your doctor. You must stop smoking!! Just by doing these things you will notice that you will have less symptoms of heart disease to worry about. For the majority of people heart attacks can be prevented or at least delayed substantially if you start looking after your body correctly. It is never too late.

Having a healthy body and mind will also help you to read these symptoms of heart disease much better allowing you to take control of your destiny instead of living as though you were a time bomb ready to go off. Another point to remember is that heart disease does not only affect men but it is highly prevalent in women. So all you women out there take note of what I have just said as it includes you too.
